Current state of cloud data security

In today’s world, where cloud technologies are becoming key to business processes, data protection is becoming critical. Many organisations are moving to the cloud to optimise their operations, but ensuring that sensitive information is protected remains a challenge. Striking a balance between easy access and strong security measures is often difficult – and only a small proportion of security executives are fully confident in their current security systems.

Lookout recently conducted a survey of 100 executives to gauge their attitudes towards cloud data security. The study found that most organisations rely on tools such as single sign-on (SSO), virtual private networks (VPNs) and data leakage prevention (DLP) solutions to protect their cloud environments. However, only 12% of security executives are confident in their security measures, indicating significant challenges in effectively protecting cloud data.

Why traditional products may not provide maximum protection

VPNs are a popular choice for protecting access to data, with 77% of respondents saying they use one. But it’s worth noting that VPNs were originally designed to provide access, not security. This means that they don’t always offer the granular controls needed to protect in cloud environments.

To increase the level of protection and trust in cloud solutions, organisations need to rethink their security tools. While some classic tools remain important, they are often unable to cope with new risks.

Introducing new solutions for better protection

Threats to data in the cloud continue to grow, with 33% of executives responding to the survey reporting data breaches via cloud applications. In addition, cybercriminals are constantly evolving their methods of attacking cloud environments, requiring organisations to adopt new security approaches. In the face of such threats, 41% of companies prioritise detecting and neutralising cyberattacks.

Compliance with regulations such as the GDPR and CCPA also remains an important aspect of ensuring customer trust and avoiding fines. 28% of organisations cited compliance as one of their top priorities, which also points to the need for improved security measures.

In light of these challenges, traditional security tools are no longer adequate. More than half of respondents are ready to move to new cloud-based solutions that offer more robust protection against data breaches and advanced threats.

Improving security for the cloud environment

To effectively protect sensitive information, it is important for organisations to regularly evaluate and improve their security approaches. In a world where threats are constantly evolving, more robust security tools are key to protecting data and meeting compliance requirements.
