Using a data diode allows information to move in only one direction. A unidirectional network is used to separate devices with data encryption (with public keys, only sending data from it is possible) and data decryption on another computer (only receiving data from the Internet on this device is possible).

Given the growth of industrial IoT and digital technologies, this technology can nowadays be applied in industrial automation and control systems (IACS) networks. Although data diodes are not a direct replacement for firewalls, they are well suited for specific tasks in IACS networks such as data replication, system health monitoring, remote backup and patch management, intrusion detection system (IDS), legal logging system (JRS), dividing the network into open and closed segments.
